Lawmakers are asking how Sayed Mohassib was allowed to work at a school.
An employee of the Department of Education with documented mental health issues was arrested and charged with murder Saturday in the recent stabbing death of a Brooklyn jogger, officials said — and lawmakers are asking how he was allowed to work in a city school.
NYPD officials said they arrested Sayed Mohassib, 27, and charged him with murder.
Katie Suarez, 28, was stabbed in the neck as she was running on the path on Shore Parkway near Bay 17th Street on Oct. 30.
It's unclear if Mohassib had a relationship to the victim, but police said previously they believed the attack to be random .
Police said he has been charged with murder, possession of a weapon and tampering with evidence. Mohassib's attorney information was not immediately available.
The city Department of Education said Mohassib had been immediately suspended and would be terminated pending a conviction. The schools press office did not identify which school he had worked at, but said it was providing extra resources and support to the school community.
Local lawmakers Saturday said Mohassib had been discharged by the U.S. Marine Corps for psychiatric issues and had a brief stint at the NYPD before being hired by the city schools.
City payroll records show Mohassib started as an officer with the NYPD in April of 2022 and left the agency in 2024 when he moved over to schools. He's worked as a "substitute school aide" ever since, according to city payroll records.
State Sen. Andrew Gounardes, City Councilmember Kayla Santosuosso and Assemblymember-elect Chris McCreight said in a joint statement that, while Mohassib had no criminal record, his past psychiatric history "raises serious questions about how he came to be employed in a local public school."
The lawmakers are demanding a "full investigation into the circumstances of his hiring."
On the night of the attack, Suarez was doing her usual routine, Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny told reporters during a recent briefing.
She left work at a nearby bank around 6:35 p.m., changed into athletic gear, met up with her mother who took her work outfit, and then set off for her run, he said.
Her father had also just left work and was planning to meet up with both of them at a nearby Wendy’s restaurant and give them a ride home after Suarez finished her jog, according to Kenny.
At 7:56 p.m., her father called Suarez to find out when she would arrive, and she told him she was about half a mile away and would be there soon. Kenny said when she didn’t arrive on time, the father set off to look for her on the path and at 8:16 p.m. he found her unconscious under a tree, bleeding from the neck.
The path where she was attacked is a stretch of running and biking trail that is not covered by surveillance cameras, Kenny added. The path runs along the water from a pier in Bay Ridge to a large shopping center in Bath Beach. It’s often crowded with runners, bikers and fishermen.
