Detectives have arrested a suspect in the stabbing death of Brooklyn jogger Katie Suarez last week, sources familiar with the case reported.

Police sources said 27-year-old Sayed Mohassib was booked on Saturday on a murder charge for the Oct. 30 killing in Bath Beach. Sources reported that he is an ex-cop who worked in the field training unit for only one month between October and November in 2022 before leaving the position. He was also discharged from the Marines for failing a psychological evaluation. He is currently a DOE employee as a teacher's aide, who works at PS 200 The Benson School and still had been working with children after the murder had taken place. He told police that he woke up after the attack covered in blood, but claimed not to have any memory of the incident.

Suarez was attacked while running after work along the Belt Parkway bike path sometime after 7:56 p.m. on Oct. 30, within the 62nd Precinct 's confines. Police say she left TD Bank with a colleague before meeting her mother at a Wendy's fast-food restaurant to change into her running outfit.

At 7:56 p.m. that night, law enforcement sources reported, she spoke with her father on a cellphone to say she was about a half-mile from their location. As time passed and she did not show up, her parents grew worried, and they set out to look for her.

Police believe Suarez was fatally stabbed on the bike path overlooking the Narrows within 20 minutes of the phone call.

“What we see at the location is a blood trail, a heavy amount of blood. They call it arterial spurting, where the attack happens. Katie is strong enough; she’s able to run about 150 feet eastbound on the path where she finally collapses underneath a tree,” NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny explained. “The wounds are from an upward trajectory going through her neck, hitting a vein, and it actually entered into her oral cavity.”

Her distraught father discovered her unconscious under that tree and begged for a passerby to dial 911. She was rushed to NYU Langone Brooklyn Hospital but perished days later after remaining in grave condition.

Police report that Suarez had regularly run along the Belt Parkway bike path, which lacked security cameras. As part of the investigation, police put out a call for public assistance earlier this week seeking dashcam video from drivers passing the area on the evening of the attack, hoping to get a glimpse of Suarez's attacker.
