A vehicle smashed into an ambulance near a Brooklyn "trunk-or-treat" event sponsored by the NYPD, leaving six people injured, according to officials.
The crash occurred just before 4 p.m. Thursday at the corner of Knickerbocker Avenue and Bleecker Street in Bushwick, police said. A dark-colored vehicle was driving on the sidewalk when it struck the parked ambulance, which sustained heavy front-end damage to the passenger-side door.
"This guy in a black car just starts speeding. Ran the curb. Hit the ambulance and bunch of people on the sidewalk got knocked over," said Haisen Gordon, the grandmother of a victim.
The force of the crash pushed the ambulance into the crowd of people outside the 83rd precinct house, according to witnesses.
Six people were hurt and taken to nearby hospitals, but all were expected to survive, according to law enforcement sources. Three children — an 8-year-old boy and two girls, ages 6 and 12 — were among the injured, along with three women.
Gordon said her 8-year-old grandson suffered a fractured arm.
The event was supposed to go until 5 p.m. but ended early due to the crash.

It was not immediately clear why the 56-year-old driver of the other vehicle went onto the sidewalk, though there were no suspected ill or terror intentions, police said. A person of interest was taken into custody at the scene and was being tested for drugs and alcohol, a law enforcement source told NBC New York.
An investigation was ongoing. Witnesses said the driver had a passenger in the vehicle. Police said charges against the driver were pending.
