The teenager was shot once in the abdomen near Crotona Park and pronounced dead at St. Barnabas Hospital, police said.
A 15-year-old boy was shot and killed on his way to school in the Bronx on Thursday morning, police said.
The shooting happened around 9:30 a.m. near East 171st Street and Crotona Place, near Crotona Park, according to an NYPD spokesperson.
Officers who responded found the boy shot once in the abdomen and drove him in their patrol car to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.
Police later identified the boy as Javits Frimpong.
Authorities did not immediately describe any suspects, or say how many there were. Police have not said what led to the shooting.
According to the boy’s father, Thomas Frimpong, Javits was on his way to school at DreamYard Preparatory School.
Frimpong, 60, said the school called him Thursday morning to say Javits was not at school. Soon after, he said, the principal called to tell him his son had been shot.
“It’s not easy for me,” he said. “I’m here with him alone.”
Frimpong said he moved to New York from Ghana in 2000, while his son followed him here last year to live with him.
Whenever Frimpong came home, he said, Javits would come downstairs to open the door for him.
He described his son as a reserved boy who came home from school and stayed inside playing games on his phone.
"My son is always quiet, always," he said.
A few days before the shooting, two students fought with Javits at school and both were suspended, Frimpong said. He said the school told him his son was not to blame.
