Three suspects spotted Queens sewer system after entering through manhole: police

Three people were reported entering NYC's sewer system through a manhole in Queens, the NYPD reported on Thursday.

Three people who were spotted entering the Queens sewer system through a manhole on Wednesday night remain at large, the NYPD reported on Thursday.

According to law enforcement sources, officers from the 108th Precinct responded to a 911 call reporting a trespass in the sewer system near 60th Street and 43rd Avenue in Woodside. The incident was reported at approximately 10:22 p.m. on Oct. 28, according to the initial report.

A witness told police he saw the trio remove a street hole cover and climb down into the sewers. The individuals remain at large, authorities said.

The NYPD's Emergency Service Unit (ESU) responded to the scene but did not enter the sewer system. The city's environmental protection department, which oversees the sewers, was notified, and a crew from the Department of Environmental Protection's Bureau of Water and Sewer Operations responded to the scene.

Police established a crime scene and began canvassing the surrounding area for video evidence that could help identify the suspects.

It is unclear whether there was any damage to the sewer infrastructure or whether the suspects encountered any hazards underground.

Anyone with information regarding this incident can call Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS (for Spanish, dial 888-57-PISTA). You can also submit tips online at crimestoppers.nypdonline.org , or on X (formerly Twitter) @NYPDTips. All calls and messages are kept confidential.

The incident comes as a phenomena of people have been seen emerging into and from NYC manholes this year. Most recently, on Oct. 11, three men were seen diving into a manhole in Manhattan's Hamilton Heights neighborhood.

Authorities have not confirmed why exactly these "mole men" are entering NYC sewers, although they have stated that they do not believe the underground activity poses security risks to the public.
