MTA celebrates Halloween with spooky station sign stickers and collectors edition maps

Stand clear of the closing trap doors! This Halloween, the MTA is turning the subway into the scare-way.

Stand clear of the closing trap doors! This Halloween, the MTA is turning the subway into the scare-way.

Starting Thursday and running through Saturday, costume-clad trick-or-treaters taking the "Boo York City Subway," Long Island Rail Road, or Metro-North Railroad will get the chance to pass through several stations temporarily renamed for the scariest time of year, agency officials announced on Wednesday.

" We know lots of families use our system to go trick- or- treating, as well as going to … the large V illage Halloween P arade , so we wanted to make it fun, as we've done with lots of different events that's happening throughout the course of the year," said Shanifah Rieara, the MTA's chief customer officer, referring to the annual parade in Manhattan's Greenwich Village.

"W e've selected, in the city, two locations per borough and some across the railroad, and we are going to do station renamings," Rieara said. "We will have these up at various locations for the day."

In addition, those riding the system this weekend will be able to add stickers of the novelty station signs and Halloween-themed subway and commuter rail maps to their buckets of candy. The maps are orange and black, bear the names of the spookified stations, and are emblazoned with images of ghosts and bats.

" We have created collectors' maps, one for the subway and one for the railroad, as well as a whole host of stickers that we have repurposed with fun station names," Rieara said.

Some of the refashioned subway station signs printed on stickers include "Slime Sq-42 Street," changed from Times Square-42 St; "Chambers St of Horrors," rather than Chambers St; and "Frighton Beach" instead of Brighton Beach. Among the commuter rail station stickers, the MTA changed Grand Central Terminal to "Ghoul Central Terminal" and Valley Stream to "Valley Scream."

The stickers also replace specific subway line logos with Halloween-themed images, such as ghosts, bats, and pumpkins.

Even though Halloween proper is not until Saturday, Rieara said the promotion is starting early for New Yorkers who cannot wait to start trick-or-treating.

"We're going to start with the engagement beginning on Thursday because we know…Halloween is, every year, it starts earlier and earlier," she said. "So we're not going to wait just for the weekend. We're going to try to get these things up on Thursday night into Friday, so folks can have some fun all day Saturday."
