A South Ozone Park man is being held without bail after he was criminally charged with attempted murder after allegedly stabbing his nephew and another man

A South Ozone Park man is being held without bail after he was criminally charged with attempted murder after allegedly stabbing his nephew and another man during a chaotic confrontation inside his home that culminated in a police officer shooting his sister on the night of Friday, Oct. 23.

Rashaun Donovan, 48, was arraigned Tuesday, Oct. 27, in Queens Criminal Court on a complaint charging him with attempted murder in the second degree, two counts of attempted assault in the first degree and armed felony offense, two counts of assault in the second degree and criminal possession of a weapon.

Police from the 113th Precinct responded to a 911 call of a home invasion at Donovan’s home at 133-35 149th St. just after 9:30 p.m. on Oct. 23.

According to the criminal complaint, Donovan stabbed his 23-year-old nephew in the left shoulder with a kitchen knife and attempted to stab him again while they were fighting each other on a staircase inside the home. Donovan proceeded to stab a 39-year-old man in his left shoulder and right bicep with the kitchen knife.

The wounded nephew appeared in a second-floor window at the front of the home and told police he could not let them into the house because his uncle was on the ground floor. As Emergency Service and hostage negotiation teams arrived at the scene, the wounded woman appeared at a third-floor window and threw a set of house keys down to them.

Police gained entry to the home through a rear door and ran up to a second-floor bedroom where they found the woman who tossed them the house keys and two men in a struggle. Officers gave multiple commands for all three to put their hands up. The two men complied, but the woman did not and moved towards officers with a knife in her hand.

NYPD Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera described what happened next.

“The female still did not comply and moved in the direction of the officers with a knife in her hand,” Rivera said. “She was within several feet of the officers when an officer discharged his firearm, striking her.”

Police also deployed a taser at her after she had been struck with the shot, Rivera noted. Another officer recovered the knife.

EMS responded to the scene and transported the woman to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where she was listed in stable condition. Officers found Donovan with a slash wound to his right pinky. EMS transported him and his nephew to North Shore University Hospital, where they were listed in stable condition. The nephew received five stitches in his left shoulder, according to the criminal complaint. The 39-year-old man was transported to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition. He received five stitches to his left shoulder and five stitches to his right bicep.

Crime scene investigators recovered two knives, and the police-involved shooting is being investigated by the NYPD’s Force Investigation Division. Pursuant to an ongoing investigation, Donovan was arrested and charged with attempted murder and other crimes the following morning.

He was arraigned Tuesday before Queens Criminal Court Judge Thomas Wright-Fernandez, who remanded Donovan into custody without bail.
