A Maspeth girl is recuperating after she had surgery on her broken leg on Friday, Oct. 23, a day after she was struck in the head by falling bricks that came loose from the side of a garage near her family’s home.
Police from the 104th Precinct responded to a 911 call of a person in need of medical attention just after 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 22. Upon their arrival, officers found the 6-year-old girl conscious and alert with a mild laceration to the left side of her head and a fracture to her left femur next to the garage at 59-01 Maspeth Ave.
EMS transported her to Bellevue Hospital, where she was listed in stable condition, police said, adding that there is no criminality suspected.
Inspectors from the city’s Department of Buildings (DOB) found that a 4-foot-high by 3-foot-wide section of brick veneer had detached from the side of the one-story garage. As a result of the partial collapse, DOB issued a violation for failure to maintain the garage building.
