Police from three Queens NYPD precincts are looking for a young con artist who targeted at least four senior citizens in the last five months and convinced them to part with their life savings in excess of $90,000 so far.
The first grand larceny occurred on Tuesday, June 2, after an 80–year-old Astoria woman received an email informing her that she was the victim of a scam and providing a contact number. The victim called the number and spoke with the modern-day Rasputin, who used deception to persuade her to withdraw $20,000 from her bank. The suspect then met the victim in the vicinity of 35th Avenue and 21st Street in the confines of the 114th Precinct in Astoria at around 3 p.m. and handed over her cash, police said. The perpetrator fled in an unknown direction.
Two months later, a 74-year-old male victim received a telephone phone call on Monday, Aug. 31, from the suspect who once again used deception to persuade the elderly gentleman to withdraw $20,000 from his bank and then meet with the scammer near the Big Six Towers on Queens Boulevard near 59th Street in Woodside in the confines of the 108th Precinct . Once the victim handed over the money, the victim ran off eastbound on Queens Boulevard toward the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway.
The perpetrator struck again just two days later in the confines of the 112th Precinct , when he called a 90-year-old man on Wednesday, Sept. 2, and conned him into withdrawing $21,000 from his bank. The victim subsequently met with the suspect at around 7 a.m. in the vicinity of Austin Street and 78th Avenue in Kew Gardens and handed over the cash to the con man, who fled on foot eastbound on Austin Street toward the Grand Central Parkway.
Two days later, a 72-year-old woman received a phone call on Friday, Sept. 4, from the unidentified man who used deception to persuade her to withdraw $30,000 from her bank. The victim subsequently met with the con artist in the vicinity of 43rd Avenue and 40th Street in Sunnyside , back in the confines of the 108th Precinct. The perpetrator took the cash and fled on foot eastbound on Queens Boulevard toward Greenpoint Avenue and Roosevelt Avenue. None of the elderly victims were injured during their encounters with the con man.
The NYPD released surveillance images of the suspect in Kew Gardens. He has a light complexion with shaggy brown hair, a thin build and wore an oversized white T-shirt with a black heart graphic across the chest, denim shorts, white sneakers and a black backpack.
A reward of up to $3,500 is being offered for information that leads to his arrest and indictment.
