Who is the retired NYPD detective facing a murder charge for GWB shooting? What we know so far

The 46-year-old victim was found inside a vehicle on the upper level of the George Washington Bridge, on the westbound side of traffic.

Former NYPD detective, 62-year-old Victor Romero is facing charges for the murder of Koran Irvine, a father of two from Valley Cottage. Melissa Colorado reports for NBC4.

The retired NYPD detective questioned in connection with Tuesday's deadly shooting on the George Washington Bridge Tuesday night has been charged with murder.

The victim was found inside a vehicle on the upper level of the George Washington Bridge, on the westbound side of traffic.

Investigators were searching for the gunman since the shooting took place, a shooting that paralyzed traffic on the upper level of the GWB given that the bridge was shut down around 7 p.m.

On Wednesday, it came to light that police were questioning a retired NYPD detective in the shooting, which investigators said could have happened because of road rage.

The NYPD identified the suspect as 62-year-old Victor Romero, confirming he was charged with murder in the fatal shooting of a 46-year-old off-duty Con Edison worker.

Romero has been retired for 25 years.

Law enforcement sources said the victim, later identified as Koran Irvine, of Rockland County was gunned down Tuesday night when the gunman fired a shot through a window of the man's car, striking him in the shoulder and exiting his neck. The shooting shut down the bridge around 7 p.m.

According to one source, the retired detective they were questioning had a similar commute to and from Rockland County as that of Irvine.

Although police say Romero's car is in NYPD custody, they have not shared the make and model yet. However, almost since the start of the investigation, authorities were looking into whether the suspect was driving a black Range Rover that is possibly involved in the apparent road rage shooting. They were using surveillance cameras to piece together what happened.

Romero's house in Haverstraw is "frozen," police said -- in other words, the home is off limits pending a search warrant and investigation.

Attorney information for Romero was not immediately known. According to law enforcement sources, police have Romero's gun and will run tests to see if it is the same weapon used in Tuesday's shooting.

According to sources, the victim was captured on video nearly crashing his blue Volkswagen Golf into another driver on an entrance ramp to the GWB.

Shortly after, Irvine's back passenger window was shot out with what law enforcement sources believe was a lone gunshot.

The bullet appeared to strike the driver's seat headrest before entering the driver's body, law enforcement sources told News 4. The victim's car later struck a median, bringing it to a full stop.
