An Astoria man died eight days after he crashed while riding a stand-up e-scooter on Northern Boulevard in Long Island City on Wednesday, Oct. 7, the NYPD announced Monday.
Jorge Santiz Hernandez, 22, of Astoria Boulevard South, was traveling eastbound at the intersection of 36th Street just before noon, when he suddenly swerved to avoid a vehicle that came too close to him just before noon.
Further investigation by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad determined that his reaction caused him to lose control of the e-scooter and he was thrown headfirst into the roadway. Police from the 114th Precinct responded to a 911 call of a collision at the intersection and found Hernandez on Northern Boulevard with severe head trauma. EMS rushed him to Elmhurst Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on Thursday, Oct. 15.
An NYPD spokesperson could not say if the victim was wearing a helmet when he crashed. There are no arrests and the investigation remains ongoing by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad. Through Oct. 18, the 114th Precinct has reported a half dozen traffic fatalities so far in 2026, one more than the five reported at the same point last year, an increase of 20%, according to the most recent CompStat report.
