The distraught family of the Con Edison worker shot to death by a retired NYPD detective broke down in tears following the arraignment Thursday, accusing the cop of having “a license to kill.” The family of slain Con Ed worker 47-year-old Koran Irvine filled a courtroom in 100 Center Street to face 62-year-old Victor Romero, who is accused of gunning down the family man during a road rage incident on Tuesday.

According to court documents, both Romero and Irvine almost collided at around 6:47 p.m. when Irvine attempted to change lanes. Prosecutors say Romero then followed Irvine and pulled up alongside him when he allegedly opened fire.

“The surveillance video establishes this was the moment of the gunshot that killed Mr. Irvine, because Mr. Irvine’s car came to an abrupt stop in the middle of free-flowing traffic, lurching to the far right lane. All of the video evidence collected thus far definitely establishes that that car, an SUV, was the defendant’s vehicle, registered to his employer and issued to him,” ADA. Matthew Sears said.

The rear window of Irvine’s Volkswagen Golf had been shot out and a bullet was found lodged in his right shoulder. Meanwhile, Romero allegedly sped away. He was tracked down to his workplace in Manhattan the next day by police, where they recovered a revolver from him and two more handguns from his home.

“I speak to my brother every day. He guides me every day. We lost our father. My dad died at 60, and now my brother is dead at 47. The last man to carry his last name is his 11-year-old son,” Zeria Irvine wept.

Attorneys for the family stated that they believed the family could have been avoided if he was not permitted to continue carrying a firearm following his controversial retirement. He also railed that he was offered bail and not immediately remanded.

“The idea of him being free after this charge, after the degree of danger that he's shown, after being the flight risk that he is, we think, it's a travesty. It's a miscarriage of justice,” attorney Keith White said.
