Teenager surrenders in Midtown subway killing after 5-day manhunt, source says

Rider advocacy group calls for the MTA to make changes

An arrest has been made in connection with the midtown Manhattan subway station shooting that claimed the life of a 26-year-old man from the Bronx, a law enforcement source with knowledge of the case said Thursday.

The 17-year-old turned himself over to police custody in the company of his attorney, the source said.

Authorities had been trying to track him down for days, since Saturday's brazen shooting at West 53rd Street and Seventh Avenue. Darrel Rodriguez, of University Heights, died after being shot in the chest.

Authorities said the shooting began with a fight between the two on the platform. Police said the fight at some point drifted into a subway car and then back to the platform, but it wasn't clear exactly where gunfire erupted.

One rider described hearing multiple shots and seeing people rush out of the station.

“We had just gotten in there we were sitting down… all of a sudden, I heard a shot… there was a mass exodus. Everyone started running out, and there was at least three more."

Rider advocates condemned the violence, saying the encounter was too close to hundreds of riders in the middle of the day.

“Our elected officials, our city, everyone has failed us and you know who’s suffering? All these poor riders like me," said Charlton D’Souza of Passengers United.
